Sunday in the backyard, Vala decided to rip a dewclaw off. And I used to think it was duclaw, but wikipedia says dewclaw and I must bow to the power that is wikipeida. Naturally this happened when I had FINALLY fallen asleep while being able to breathe for the first time in a week.
My nap was interrupted by Ben calling me for help to clean up the mess. We brought her inside and clipped as much of the nail as we easily could, cleaned it with salt water and wrapped it up.
The home made bandage. Some guaze over the dewclaw (that spelling still looks wrong to me) and a bandage tied around it. It didn’t stay on long and got retied many times over the course of Sunday night.
After she got over the bandage on her foot she was very happy again. Vala usually knows when my iPhone is on camera mode – thought I don’t know how as 99% of the time my phone is on silent. But for once I got a photo of her grinning madly at me. Puppy love!
We couldn’t really get to the nail to cut it properly so before work on Monday we dropped into our vet – we didn’t have an appointment but I’m in there regularly buying her meds so I figured there was a good chance that if I showed up as they opened that they would see us. Unfortunately the vet wasn’t going to be in for another hour so they called the next nearest in their chain of vets and they had an appointment. Another 15 mins down the road and another vet clinic – luckily Vala loves the vets. ALL THE SMELLS!
The vet easily got to the nail and clipped it – while Vala stayed perfectly still. Such a good dog. The vet couldn’t believe how well behaved she was and kept exclaiming over her and telling other staff! They bandaged her up and gave us some antibiotics to take home for her to prevent infection – as she has other serious medical conditions they didn’t want to take any chances and wanted her on antibiotics. The vet and vet nurse bandaged her up and kept talking about how easy it was to clip the dewclaw.
The good (?) thing about spending so much so regularly at the vets is that their loyalty scheme pays off pretty fast for us so $20 off the consult was convenient, seeing as it was an unexpected expense.
Naturally, by the time we got home the bandage was off…so I brought it in from the car and laughed a lot at the leg shaped bandage lying on the floor. Thankfully the bandage can restick so once again we rebandaged her. And duct taped it a bit for good measure.
Then we regressed into some puppy sulking when she realised she couldn’t get the bandage off and was going to be closely supervised all day by Ben while I went off to work.
And then came a very clingy puppy when I got home tonight. She really wanted hugs so I let her sleep half on me on the condition that she was also a laptop table. She wasn’t that happy with the laptop table part of it. The laptop didn’t seem to mind the furry table. Somehow the bandage was still on when I got home so I’m counting that as a win!

What an ordeal. The cat that has decided to adopt our family came in the front door carrying a dead mouse. He was pleased with himself and deposited his gift under our dining table. I’m not sure he was entirely happy with our response. lol
Haha for her this barely scratches the surface as an ordeal! I don’t get cats and the dead animal thing!
What a sweetie. Poor paw though. And when our dog had trouble with a duclaw I am sure the vet wrote it this way (as they were educating me on what a duclaw was lol).
Yeah I can’t get duclaw out of my head. Maybe it’s a US/Australian spelling thing? Though maybe not if you know it as duclaw.
Oh what a cutie. Hope she is feeling much better and the paw is on the mend. Our old chocolate lab, he’s 12 has been struggling a bit lately. Stiff and sore, old age of course and some days are worse than others. Luckily our 4 year old golden retriever keeps him young at heart.
Cold weather takes such a toll on the older dogs! The paw is going better but we’re just keeping an eye on it and they did say we may have to get it trimmed regularly by the vet as it grows to make sure it grows properly.
Awww, the poor little thing. I’d sulk and get attention too. My furbaby is getting old and had a bath on the weekend and now has clumps of fur falling out! Eeek! Off to the vets for some medicated skincare for him.
Vala is way overdue a bath but it’s a bit cold now so I feel bad when I bath her in winter and avoid it for too long haha.

Oh bless her, how adorable. Dogs are such troopers. We have two staffies and they are just smiles on muscle on legs.

Aww hope your doggy feels better soon. Our chocolate lab ripped off his dewclaw recently too! But then his other claws started to become brittle and break as well, so a trip to the vet was needed. Poor thing had an infection and we also had to start him on fish oil to increase the strength of his nails. He’s on the mend now too.

Nawwww…. sorry about the paw but a dog with a bandage on is oh so cute. The cuddles must be nice.
Our 14 year old dog is currently battling with arthritis. It’s a cruel thing but he is getting through it.
I know! the worst part is that she knows it’s cute too haha.
Oh, poor sweet Vala! It breaks my heart when I see a dog in pain or injured. Love how she made her feelings known with the bandage, though! LOL! Wishing her a speedy recovery.
